  • Fend Off Fraud With These Easy Tips

Concerned about fraud? So are we. With fraud continuing to rise, what steps can you take to help protect your account from being compromised? Here are four tips to help you protect yourself and your account from fraud.

    1. Keep your contact information up to date.

It’s important that you keep your contact information up to date with your financial institution. Particularly, emails and cell or mobile phone numbers. To help verify your identity, your financial institution may use your email and cell or mobile phone number in combination with other security features. In addition to keeping your account secure, having updated contact information will ensure that you are aware of important announcements and information about your accounts. There are three easy ways you can update your contact information through your Mobile App, Online Banking, or you can visit a local branch.

    2. Don’t trust caller ID.

Have you ever received a call with a number similar to your own, but you don’t recognize it? These types of calls are called spoofing. Technology has made it easy for scammers to fake caller ID information. Be sure to keep this in mind and know that the name and number you see displayed on your phone’s screen cold be part of a scam. If you receive an odd call from a familiar name or number, demanding personal information or money, hang up. If you think it may be a legitimate call, call back at a number you know is real.

    3. Secure your information.

You can create the best password in the world, but it won’t do you any good if someone is looking over your shoulder as you type it in. Different types of software such as keyboard loggers that make a record of your keystrokes have aided hackers in password theft. You should make sure that your operating system is updated, and that your device is running up-to-date anti-malware and anti-virus software.

Also, don’t forget to lock your phone. Most phones have the option of using a code or pattern to unlock it. Some have even integrated new technology like registering your fingerprint or facial recognition.

    4. Check your records regularly.

Check your records at least once every three months. Keeping a personal record can help you catch unusual activity. If you spot something unusual on your accounts, quickly report it. Sign up for eStatements and eNotices in order to receive your documents securely through Online or Mobile Banking. (With AllSouth's eStatements, you'll also have access to the past 18 months of statements.)
