In the summer of 2022, University of South Carolina senior Katia joined AllSouth as a marketing intern. Throughout her final semester at school, and now in 2023, Katia has served our team in many ways. Working closely with her team members, Katia has been responsible for our social media presence, assisting with photography, online resources, and more. She is a dedicated team player, creative and inventive, and wonderfully kind. Learn more about Katia and what it's like to be an AllSouth intern by reading her interview below.
Tell us a little bit about you. Are you from Columbia?
My major is in mass communications with a minor in media arts. I am a military child so I moved around quite a bit. I was born in Fort Benning, GA, and moved to Columbia when I was 8, so I call Columbia home. One of my interests is music journalism. I have an online magazine that is centered on local talent including recording artists, producers, photographers, and more.
Why did you apply for the marketing internship position at AllSouth?
I applied for the marketing internship because I always knew I was very financially literate for my age and learning about marketing for a credit union seemed like a great place to start my professional career. I love graphic design and creating brand awareness, which I do for my own brand and for student organizations at the University of South Carolina. I have always had an eye for design and felt this position would bring me to the next level with my skills, professionalism, and goals.
Is there anything you’ve learned about credit unions/the financial industry that you didn’t know before starting your internship?
I've learned so much more financial terminology as well as the products/benefits that can come from credit unions. I learned about all of the different types of loans we offer at AllSouth, how our rates are determined, and I learned about things like a 401k and an IRA (Individual Retirement Account) and why they are so beneficial.
What’s a typical day like for you as the marketing intern here at AllSouth?
My main responsibilities as a marketing intern include staying on top of the social media, creating various forms of content, updating content, and more. A typical day for me starts by checking my email and notes to refresh myself on my assignments, opening up design software such as Photoshop, creating graphics and content for our social media, scheduling the content and making sure the calendar is always filled for the month with content. I also meet regularly with Camille, the creative media specialist, and Karen, the marketing manager, to discuss and plan future content. In the morning I always check in with Ivette, the marketing operations assistant, to see what our department has going on for the day. If I finish my assignments, I usually help Ivette with whatever she is working on, which is often some kind of community engagement. I take a lot of photos and videos of the events we have and love to be involved with them. Recently, I really enjoyed our employee volunteer day at Harvest Hope and our partnership with Families Helping Families holiday wrapping day.
What’s been the best part about your marketing internship with AllSouth? Do you have a favorite project that you’ve worked on?
The best part about my marketing internship so far has been my growth. I’ve grown in a sense of navigating the professional world, designing for a company and staying on brand. I’ve grown in the aspect of working on a team, because working with the marketing team here at AllSouth has been a dream. I really have an appreciation for the whole team, not just as co-workers, but as people. My biggest takeaway is the team aspect. I now have more knowledge on team roles and the importance of an effective leader and team. I’m proud of myself, and I consider this internship a big accomplishment.
What’s the atmosphere like at AllSouth? What’s the marketing team like?
The atmosphere at AllSouth is so nice and welcoming. The marketing team is like a family and it was almost an instant connection for me. Everyone seems to have a lot of loyalty and respect for the company. There are multiple employees who have been with AllSouth for 10+ years. I also love that AllSouth is so community focused, with the monthly donations and volunteer opportunities. It truly is a great place to work.
Has this internship been different than what you expected – easier, more challenging? What has surprised you?
I came in with the expectation that I was just going to be working on social media, but ended up being involved in so much more. I've been able to be a part of various events, advertisements, and team meetings, which surprised me. The most challenging aspect of my internship has been learning all of the financial jargon used so that I can accurately represent the credit union online.
What’s something you’ve learned through your internship with AllSouth?
I have learned so much about how important it is to be able to work as a team and how valuable it is to be able to rely on your team. I have learned more about branding, financial tips, the importance of local business partnerships and community engagement, as well as learning what a valuable skillset I have.
What types of challenges have you faced throughout your time at AllSouth?
I had to learn how to express my creativity in a way that fit into AllSouth's branding and mission. As I learned more about AllSouth, I was better able to translate my knowledge of design and communication into our branding. Because AllSouth is a financial institution, there are certain compliance rules and other brand guidelines that we have to adhere to, which is something I had not experienced before. It was also challenging to manage school, my internship, extracurriculars, and looking for jobs post-graduation, but that got more manageable with time.
What are your plans after you graduate? Do you think that your internship has helped prepare you for your post-graduation plans?
I’ve been applying for creative media positions and positions related to my interests and skills. I also plan on continuing to work on my personal projects and further develop my skill sets. This internship has helped me in more ways than one! I couldn’t be more grateful for this experience.
